Schlager is a hobby, jazz is a passion. To combine these two, I suggest you to listen to Roger Cicero and his big band. Last Sunday they gave a concert in Kulturpalast in Dresden. Yes, I was there. It was a good reason to travel to a city I never visited before.

Schlager är en hobby, jazz en passion. Om man vill kombinera dessa två så rekommenderar jag Roger Cicero och hans storband. Förra söndagen gav de konsert i Dresden och jag var där! Förutom Roger så var det bra orsak att resa till en stad som jag aldrig besökt.



The Kulturpalast (spelling is correct!) is a typical building á la “architecture brutal” from the DDR period. This kind of houses, monumental buildings from the 1700th century, bombed houses newly restored and residential areas with patrician villas, gives the city an interesting atmosphere and appearance. The river Elbe divides the city, which has about 500 000 inhabitants. The location close to the Czech Republic and Poland gives me a déjà vu feeling of Warsaw, Prague and Budapest.

Kulturpalast (jepp – stavningen är korrekt!) är en typisk byggnad á la “arkitektur brutal” från gamla DDR perioden. Denhär typen av byggnader, monumentala palatsliknanden kolosser från 1600-talet, bombade hus som nyligen restaurerats och områden med patricier villor ger en intressant atmosfär och känslaFloden Elbe delar staden, som idag har ca 500 000 invånare. Dresdens närhet till Tjeckien, och Polen ger mig en ”déjà vu” känsla av Warszawa, Prag och Budapest.

Back to the concert. I discovered what a great jazz singer Roger Cicero is, during the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki 2007. The Germany entry “Frauen Regier’n die Welt” became my favorite song that year. The playlist consisted of songs from his two latest albums: “Argerecht” and “Beziehungsweise”, but he also did his Eurovision entry. The big band consists of 13 professional musicians. No women! No good! I sure there must be a lot of female musicians in Germany. Unfortunately my trumpet playing is far too rusty nowadays - otherwise I would send him my CV.

Men tillbaka till konserten. Jag upptäckte att Roger Cicero var en fabulös jazzsångare i samband med Eurovision Song Contest i Helsingfors 2007. Han tävlade för Tyskland med låten “Frauen Regier’n die Welt”, som blev en av mina favoriter det året. Låtlistan under konserten var mestadels från de två senaste CD-skivorna, “Argerecht” och “Beziehungsweise”. Givetvis framfördes också Eurovision låten! Storbandet består av 13 professionella musiker. Tyvärr inga kvinnor! Man kan ju undra varför. Även i Tyskland måste det finnas massor med kvinnliga musiker. Dessvärre är mitt trumpetspelande alldeles för ringrostigt idag. Annars hade jag definitivt skickat in en ansökan!

I read in an article that the lyrics in Cicero’s songs are very macho but I have a feeling that there is a hidden meaning. Or maybe not? Maybe this is the reason for the lack of women in the band. Roger is extremely popular among the ladies. Among the audience I discovered some couples where the husbands pretended to be not too much entertained …. Or influenced by Rogers’s charm! Overall - I would say that Roger’s music attracts all ages and categories. My wish is to see Roger Cicero in our neighbourhoods. He and his band would be perfect for Stockholm Jazz Festival and Pori Jazz. Or Berns, Nalen, Fasching... From my side I do what I can to influence his management.

Jag läste i en artikel att Ciceros texter är väldigt macho! Kanske. Det skulle i så fall kunna förklara frånvaron av kvinnor i bandet. Nåja – jag tror faktiskt inte på den teorin. Det verkar finnas en undermening i texterna som t.o.m. jag kan förstå trots min bristfälliga gymnasietyska. Roger är hur som helst mycket populär bland kvinnorna, vilket gav en del intressanta iakttagelser bland publiken. T.ex. äkta par där mannen gjorde vad han kunde för att inte bli alltför påverkad av Roger charm!! Men generellt måste jag säga att publiken är bred, både vad det gäller ålder och målgrupp.
Nu hoppas jag på att vi inom snar framtid ska få se Roger Cicero i våra trakter. Han skulle absolut passa på Stockholm Jazz Festival eller Pori Jazz. Eller Berns, Nalen, Fasching…. Jag gör vad jag kan för att bearbeta hans ”management”!

Despina Vandi, Greek megastar, gave a concert in Stockholm

It’s not often we have the possibility to listen to Greek artists in Stockholm of such a magnitude as Despina Vandi. Saturday the 17th was such an evening. The arena, Solnahallen, is an absolutely charmless venue but nobody care as soon as Despina and her band entered the stage.


Before she started, Giorgos Lucas and Stathis Raftopoulos (on photo) warmed up the audience of mainly Greek origin – with some exceptions. Giorgos Lucas and Stathis Raftopoulos are rather new artists, but with my limited understanding of the Greek language I have not able to found out much info about them. During the party afterwards I talked to Stathis and he told me it was the first time he performed in a concert with Despina Vandi. This possibility came up because they have the same songwriter.


I saw Despina in her show at Rex Theatre in Athens 2007 but the concert yesterday was more relaxed. She managed to create an intimate atmosphere and many people were singing along. How come that Greeks always know the lyrics? It's always impressing me a lot.

The concert was arranged by Quality Entertainment, owned by Giorgos Kyrlis, During 2010 the intention is to arrange concerts with both Andonis Remos and Pashalis Terzis. Lovers of Greek music in Sweden hope that Mr Kyrlis will continue his work.

Despina Vandi started her career in 1994 and today she is one of the most successful Greek singers with fans in many countries. Her album “Gia” from 2001 and Stin Avli Tou Paradisou (In The Garden Of Paradise) from 2004 sold multi platinum in Greece. In 2002 she was the winner of "Best Selling Greek Artist" in the World Music Awards. Her latest full album 10 Hronia Mazi came out 2007 with a repackaged version 2008. Her latest new song, Iparhi Zoi, was released in June 2009. Despina Vandi became 40 this year. She has two children and is married to former football player Themistoklis "Demis" Nikolaidis.

In the future it would be a pleasure to see Despina Vandi participate for Greece in Eurovision Song Contest. Let’s hope!

Fleetwood Mac konsert - mina reflektioner. And some long-distance photos

FleetwoodMac konsert, Globen, 10 okt 2009:
Fleetwood Mac får väl betecknas som något av ett kultband numera. 4 av gruppens 5 frontfigurer, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie och Mick Fleetwood, har alla nått en ålder på 60 +. Lördagens konsert i Globen var avslappnad och gruppen förmedlade en familjär stämning med mellansnack och återblickar.

Lindsey Buckingham ägnade sig stundtals åt överdrivet orerade med gitarrerna men det var väntat.
Gubben Fleetwood, bakom sitt podium av trummor, fick mig att associera till Dr John’s woodoo trakter.
John McVie gjorde inget väsen av sig utan levererade de basgångar han skulle. Christine McVie saknas på denna turné eftersom hon säger sig ha gått i pension och inte orkar med turnélivet. Kanske ett klokt beslut för henne men hon är saknad i bandet. Hennes keyboard har varit en motvikt till gitarrutsvävningarna. Samt att flera av gruppens bästa låtar genom tiderna faktiskt är skrivna av henne: ”Say You Love Me”, ”Don’ Stop”, ”Oh Daddy” för att nämna några.

Det är befriande att gå på en konsert där bandet inte ägnar sig åt någon koreografi. Man kan knappast kalla Stevie Nicks dansande med sjalen och tamburinen för koreografiskt. Det har hon ju liksom alltid gjort, dock med mer intensitet under tidigare år. Säkert beroende på frekventa intag av kemiskt förstärkta preparat. I Svenska Dagbladet stod att läsa ett citat häromdagen att ”Kokainet åt upp min näsa” och att detta påverkar Stevie Nicks livet ut. Bland annat genom ett stort hål i näsan, på fel ställe. Trots detta är hennes röst hyfsat intakt och den går inta att missta sig på. På finlandssvenska skulle vi kalla den ’kännspak’.

Schlager evening at Stockholm Pride 30 July 2009

11.000 people joined the schlager evening with mainly Swedish artists. Unfortunately only a few international Eurovision celebrities participated this year: Yoanna from Iceland, who ended up as second in Moscow, and the winner himself, Alexander Rybak.



The host turned out to be Shirley Clamp (MF 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009). She entered the stage in her turquoise “Min Kärlek-dress” from Melodifestivalen year 2004, joking about the size due to “additional 10 kilos and one kid later”.

Velvet has participated in Melodifestivalen several time but has never managed to reach the top-position she is worth.


For the first time the event was produced by the show group Schlagerfeber. All in all the show was okay with some highlights but many of us missed the International touch and the unexpected surprises from long-time-forgotten artists.

There is a huge difference between Athens and Patra in Greece and Kronoby in Finland. The destinations have their own individual charm and I love them all. Nevertheless, I have to admit, that for the moment I’m a bit concern regarding Finland due to the lack of sun and a temperature which I wish was 5 degrees higher.
Det är en stor skillnad mellan Aten och Patra I Grekland och Kronoby I Finland. Samtliga ställen har sin charm och jag uppskattar dem alla. Dock, måste jag medge att jag för tillfället är lite skeptisk när det gäller Finland. Anledningen är avsaknaden av sol och en temperatur som borde vara 5 grader högre.

Before the departure to Finland I visited the opening evening at Stockholm Jazz Fest (15-19 July at Skeppsholmen). The evening was a tribute to New Orleans and the Southern states of USA. Among the artists were Dr John, Allen Toussaint, Blind Boys of Alabama and Little Feat. All of them delivered according to expectations except Little Feat, which was a disappointment. Where was the bluesy rock soul? The group insisted on playing a fusion-funk without a beginning, nor an end, and with non-existing melodies.

Innan det var dags för avresa till Finland besökte jag öppningsdagen på Stockholm Jazz Fest (15-19 juli på Skeppsholmen). Kvällen var en hyllning till New Orleans och sydstaterna. Bland artisterna fanns Dr John, Allen Toussaint, Blind Boys of Alabama och Little Feat. Alla levererad vad som förväntades och till publikens uppskattning utom Little Feat som var en besvikelse. Var fanns den bluesiga rock soulen? Bandet insisterade att spela an fusion-funk utan vare sig början eller slut och med en total avsaknad av melodier.

One of the main attractions during the second day was the world famous trumpet player Roy Hargrove and his Big Band. Well, I missed them but it was compensated as we were on the same flight between Stockholm and Helsinki. The band was on their way to Pori Jazz. I had the chance to talk to Vincent ….. one of the trombonist, and he told me about the jazz life in his hometown Detroit.
En av huvudattraktionerna under dag två var den världskända trumpetare Roy Hargrove och hans Big Band. Jag missade dem men det kompenserades när det uppdagades att vi var på samma flyg mellan Stockholm och Helsingfors. Bandet uppträdde också på Pori Jazz. Jag satt bredvid en av trombonisterna Vincent …. Och han berättade om jazzlivet I sin hemstad Detroit.

Principally it was not allowed to take photos at the Jazz Fest, but I managed to take a few. I princip var fotografering förbjuden på jazzfestivalen men jag lyckades än snika till mig några bilder.












For one more week the relaxing country life goes on at the summerhouse in Kronoby. It includes sauna, playing cards, socializing with relatives, reading books and listening to Radio Vega (a local Finnish-Swedish channel).
Det avkopplande lantlivet fortgår ytterligare en vecka på sommarstugan i Kronoby. Det inkluderar bastu, kortspel (Klöver-8), socialisering med släkten, läsa böcker och att lyssna på Radio Vega (en finlandsvensk kanal).
